After rounds of massive doctors walk-out,... finally some progress between the government and the doctors association on their talks of reforming health sector.
Trainee doctors association in South Korea has agreed to go back to work on a limited basis to respond to the resurgence of COVID-19.
That decision came on late Sunday after its leaders met with the country's Prime Minister.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
Last Friday,... trainee doctors across South Korea went on a strike for an indefinite period,... in opposition to the government's medical reform measures.
However,... after a meeting between its leaders and Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun on Sunday,... the Korean Intern and Resident Association agreed to "actively take part in medical services for responding to COVID-19 in consideration of the situation."
This, however, does not mean the strike is over.
Instead, the association's members will return to work on a limited basis,... while trying to resolve pending issues through negotiations with the government.
While the health ministry has offered to shelve its reform plans until after the COVID-19 situation stabilizes,... the association shot back,.. saying the ministry cannot be trusted,... accusing it of a history of deception and about-faces.
With doctors also set to stage a walk-out this week,... the Korean Medical Association,... which represents 130-thousand doctors,... said it reached out to the Prime Minister's Office,... the ruling Democratic Party and the main opposition United Future Party with a proposal for emergency talks.
They will meet on Monday at 2PM, Korea time.
The KMA warned that if talks break down,... the association will arrange a third general strike.
