Former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama urged Japan to modestly accept historical facts from its colonial era.
Murayama released a statement on Saturday commemorating the 25th anniversary of the release of the Murayama Statement in 1995, a political declaration synthesizing the position of the Japanese government on historical recognition and reconciliation with Asia and other nations subjected to Japanese colonialism.
He also criticized radical groups in Japan for attacking efforts to verify and reflect on history.
He further emphasized that the attitude of not acknowledging invasion and colonial rule will damage the reputation of Japan.
