Ki Sung-yueng returns to K League after 11 years in Europe

Former Korean National Football team captain, Ki Sung-yueng has returned to K League after 11 years in Europe. The midfielder, who represented the Taeguk Warriors in three World Cups and two Olympic Games, has joined his former team FC Seoul.
Ki says that it was "the right time to come home".

"I hope this move can be my football career's second prime."
That's what former South Korean national team captain, Ki Sung-yueng said in a press conference on Wednesday, after sealing a return to K League and his former club, FC Seoul.
Speaking upon his return, the midfielder said, it was the right time for him to come home.
"I feel I can contribute to the team and that now is a good time to come back. I want to show those who have always supported me that I have grown as a player.
The reunion between Ki and FC Seoul comes after the 31-year-old spent 11 years in Europe. In 2009, Ki left Seoul and had a trophy-laden two-year stay with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, before spells with Swansea City, Sunderland, and Newcastle United in the English Premier League.
After leaving Newcastle in early 2020, Ki signed for Real Mallorca in Spain's La Liga but the COVID-19 pandemic limited him to just one appearance.
But, Ki believes that he can get his career back on track with FC Seoul.
"I want to help the players here. I believe FC Seoul can compete with the top teams again in the future and I want to help us get there.
He added that his lack of playing over the last year was something that he had never experienced before in his career, but allowed him to think about his next career move.
Ki put pen to paper on a three-and-half-year contract and will wear the number eight shirt...but is targeting an August playing return.
