South Korea is set to demand that UNESCO remove Japan's historical industrial sites,... including Hashima Island,... from its list of World Heritage sites.
According to a South Korean ruling party lawmaker on Sunday,... the Ministry of Cultural, Sports and Tourism will send a letter to UNESCO later this month.
The request comes as Japan has refused to offer explanations stating that forced labor was used at its 23 Meiji-era industrial sites,... including the Hashima Island,... at a newly opened information center in Tokyo.
Upon the listing of the sites in 2015,... Tokyo pledged to establish the center in remembrance of the Korean victims who were coerced into forced labor during World War 2.
