The entire aviation industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and it is facing an "unprecedented crisis".
In dealing with such difficulties, Korean Air has decided to offer its crew members unpaid leave lasting up to a year..., a step that has never been taken before.
Kim Sung-min reports.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to take its toll on the airline industry, Korean Air is offering unpaid leave for up to one year to its cabin crew members.
According to industry sources on Thursday, the application period is open until the 17th..., for those who have worked there for more than two years.
Right now, Korean Air is running less than 20-percent of its usual international flights.
And it is not only Korean Air but the entire global aviation industry that is facing an "unprecedented crisis."
"We forecast a loss of revenues for airlines that is accounting for 419 billion dollars, which is 50 percent of our revenues and tribulated loss for the industry around 84 billion dollars."
Amid the fallout from the pandemic, Hyundai Development Company's acquisition of troubled carrier Asiana Airlines also faces a rough passage.
After HDC asked to renegotiate the deal, the creditors have in return demanded details in their request on Wednesday.
Earlier this week, HDC showed its willingness to take over the dwindling carrier, but emphasized the company's value has fallen significantly since last December when the deal was signed.
Based on the original deal, the takeover was to be completed by June 27th, but there is a clause allowing an additional six months for more negotiations if needed.
