The U.S. economy shrank at an annual rate of 5-percent in the first three months this year faster than the initial estimate of 4-point-8 percent,... and a far worse outcome is likely in Q2.
The Commerce Department reported Thursday that it was the biggest quarterly decline since an 8-point-4 percent drop in the last quarter of 2008 during the global financial crisis.
Economists say nationwide lockdowns and a massive uptick in unemployment will push growth down even further.
The White House says it will not release its official midyear economic update this summer, stressing that the underlying economic data would be too uncertain to convey a meaningful picture about the recovery.
