President Moon Jae-in has stressed the need to protect jobs and overcome the COVID-19 crisis,.... vowing to swiftly push ahead with a so-called "Korean New Deal" and prepare for a digital age.
Moon met on Thursday with the CEOs of 17 companies from nine hard-hit industries, including aviation and shipbuilding... as well as representatives from the country's business lobby groups.
All efforts will be directed toward economic revitalization, protecting jobs and expanding the employment safety net. The digital era, which has been sped up due to the COVID-19 pandemic, demands more aggressive and swift changes.
President Moon said the government has already drawn up a support package worth roughly 200 billion U.S. dollars about 13 percent of the country's GDP to overcome the crisis.
More help is on its way, he said, as the government prepares a third supplementary budget.
Moon also vowed to help foster the human resources that will be required in new industries such as AI and future cars.
The president also called for cooperation not only between the government and businesses,... but also between large and small companies, as well as between management and labor.
It is important to protect the industrial ecosystem with an extraordinary resolve to protect jobs, our industries and revive the economy.
President Moon said he was confident that South Korea will overcome the industrial crisis... and that through concerted efforts between firms, the government and the people,... it will become a global leader in the era of the digital economy.
