President Moon Jae-in's call to uncover the truth behind the order to use military force during the 1980 pro-democracy movement is based on a South African model.
During his speech this week to mark the 40th anniversary of the May 18th Democracy Movement,... he said the truth will lead to forgiveness and reconciliation.
The top office says his remarks reflect the work of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission created to investigate human rights violations during Apartheid.
That commission investigated over 7-thousand-1-hundred people, and 849 were granted amnesty.
President Moon has long called for those responsible to reveal the truth,... saying it's needed for reconciliation and unity.
On May 18th, 1980,... the military under then-leader Chun Doo-hwan declared martial law to launch a deadly crack down on protesters in Gwangju.
