문 대통령, 아세안+3 화상 정상회의 참여... "양자, 다자 차원에서 적극 협력 필요"

President Moon Jae-in took part in another virtual summit... this time, with the leaders of ASEAN member nations, China and Japan.
Topping their discussions: countering the COVID-19 pandemic and ways to minimize its socio-economic fallout.
President Moon stressed the need for regional cooperation and vowed to share South Korea's first-hand experience and lessons learned.
We have our presidential correspondent Kim Min-ji standing by at the nation's top office.
Min-ji, unprecedented times have certainly brought about a new norm.
That's right.
Similar to the video conference between the leaders of the Group of 20 in March,... this was another virtual summit.
This time, bringing together leaders of the 10 ASEAN member states... as well as South Korea, China and Japan the ASEAN plus three group.
Now the closed-door session ended just minutes ago,... so we don't have many details yet.
But during President Moon's turn to speak he introduced the country's quarantine system based on three principles transparency, openness and democracy as well as Seoul's efforts to minimize the economic fallout.
Moon pointed out that the things that have proven indispensable in South Korea's fight were intensive testing and tracing, thorough epidemiological surveillance and the voluntary participation of the people based on transparent information-sharing.
To that end, Moon made a three-point proposal for ASEAN+3.
First was active bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the region to provide quarantine and medical supplies in a timely manner.
He said Seoul will secure additional funding for humanitarian assistance and provide support to those that ask for help.
He also pointed to the ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Fund stressing the need to deploy all possible resources.
Moon also called for the strengthening of regional health cooperation to share and utilize clinical data,... and to step up efforts to develop vaccines and treatments.
He proposed establishing a dialogue channel between the health ministers of ASEAN and South Korea... as well as one that includes China and Japan.
Lastly, Moon highlighted the need to maintain the essential flow of economic and human exchanges, trade, investment and food to minimize the economic repercussions.
He again proposed allowing travel for essential persons such as business leaders and medical staff.
Moon stressed that COVID-19 is a crisis that cannot be overcome by the efforts of individual countries,... saying that South Korea will stand with ASEAN to defeat the pandemic and overcome the economic crisis.
The leaders will be adopting a joint statement,... and hopefully I will have the details of that in our later newscast.
Back to you.
