Britain's Prince Harry has spoken about the importance of mental health in a new Rugby League World Cup campaign which was revealed ahead of the tournament's draw, his first public engagement since stepping back as a senior royal.

In a video released on Thursday, the Duke of Sussex said the five-point initiative is "the first time that a major international sporting event has a central charter focusing on the mental fitness of players, coaches, fans and communities."

The charter aims to create mental health awareness for players, officials and volunteers and those around them.

8,000 young rugby league players will also take part in mental health awareness workshops and grassroot coaches would also be trained to deliver their own workshops, under the charter.

The Duke of Sussex was expected to help unveil the fixtures for the 2021 tournament at Buckingham Palace later on Thursday in his first public engagement since he and his wife Meghan announced they would split their time between the UK and Canada and become financially independent.

Teams from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France, Australia and New Zealand are among those who will feature in the tournament being hosted in the UK and Ireland.
