During the 10th anniversary celebrations of VGM Hospital, a flagship program "Gastro Update 2019" was conducted, in which many doctors from all over India participated and spoke about several medical conditions, treatment procedures, and the latest trends related to the Gastroenterology field.

In this video, India's leading Orthopaedic Specialist Dr. Suman - MS(Orth)., MRCS(EdiN., UK)., MCH Orth(UK)., PGDHM., Fellow(S.Korea) of VGM Ortho Centre, Coimbatore explains about the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of the Enteropathic Arthritis Condition and its differences from other types of arthritis.

Dr. Suman started the session with the history of the relationship between Enteropathic arthritis and IBD, which was first observed in the 1930s. After that, he gave the introduction that the enteropathic arthritis medical condition is one of the many types of seronegative spondyloarthropathies(SSA). The two types of IBD conditions Ulcerative Colitis(UC) and Crohn's Disease(CD) both can be mainly be associated with enteropathic arthritis, and other than these two IBD conditions there are several GI diseases involved with joints like Whipple’s disease, post dysentery, gut bacterial infection, parasitic infections, etc. can encourage the enteropathic type of arthritis.

Then Dr. Suman, began with epidemiology to discuss the incidence and shared the information that the most common extraintestinal manifestation of IBD is Enteropathic arthritis, almost one-third of the IBD patients are affected by this condition. The reasons may be underdiagnosis, transient nature of oligoarticular arthritis, response to steroids given for IBD flares. This type of arthritis is more common with Crohn's disease than Ulcerative colitis, and presents itself in either of these two types, sacroiliitis or peripheral arthritis. Peripheral type affects women more than men, and the axial type is the opposite of peripheral affects the men mostly.

After that, Dr. Suman spoke about pathogenesis which is still unknown but he suggested to note down a couple of points(mentioned in the video). Then, he moved on to rheumatological manifestations and gave us the possible presentations in which the two main outcomes are peripheral arthritis(women), axial arthritis(men) resembles Ankylosing spondylitis, and other subtle presentations include clubbing, periostitis, amyloidosis, osteoporosis, granulomatous vasculitis, and other complications of steroid therapy, etc.

Later, the two major types of arthritis in IBD- axial and peripheral were explained including its causes, symptoms, classifications and its presentations, etc. Watch the full video and learn in detail about the several types of arthritis in IBD, different diagnosis methods (laboratory & X-ray), joint aspiration, management, and various treatments (types of drugs used) for this condition.
