South Korea's National Security Council has agreed to push actively for the early return of 26 U.S. military bases in the country.
Chaired by security chief Chung Eui-yong, the NSC's standing committee agreed to try and speed up the return of these sites, which are or will be vacant.
U.S. forces have been moving largely to a refurbished base in the city of Pyeongtaek.
For the base at Yongsan, in central Seoul, the NSC agreed it would start the process by the end of this year.
The council also examined the state of relations between Seoul and Tokyo and agreed to continue working to get Japan to roll back its trade restrictions.
