One of China’s biggest pop sensations is not a human.

Luo Tianyi is the country’s first hologram pop star. She doesn’t exist in real life, but she has over 3 million followers on Weibo, China’s Twitter.

Created in 2012, Luo has developed a cult following among anime and cosplay fans, who go to her concerts, interact with her online, and even write music for her.

She’s become so popular that the Chinese government has even used her for propaganda.

What’s behind this huge sensation? We talked to her fans and creator to find out.
