Medieval Peasant Diet 'Much Healthier' Than Diets Today You may have assumed medieval English peasants only ate
flavorless gruel. But according to a sample retrieved from 500-year-old pottery, their diets were surprisingly nutritious. The food sample, found in West Cotton in Northamptonshire, shows that peasants had access to bread and cooked meats. The University of Bristol found lipids, fats, oils and natural waxes on
the ceramics. Medieval peasants relied on "white meats," a euphemism for butter and green cheeses, as a calorie source. With oats and barley serving as food staples, their diets were much healthier than the processed meals from today. Julie Dunne, University of Bristol, via MailOnline
