Alabama Senate Passes Most
Restrictive Abortion Ban in U.S. The Republican-led Senate debated for more than
four hours before voting 25-6 to pass the legislation. The bill, HB 314, will make it a felony for
doctors to perform abortions in the state if signed by Alabama governor Kay Ivey. Doctors will receive up to 99 years in
prison for performing an abortion, with the only exception being if the procedure
is necessary to avoid a serious health risk, such
as ectopic pregnancy or a lethal anomaly. Democrats attempted to add
an amendment to the bill that
would exempt rape and incest
victims, but it failed 11-21. The intention of the bill is to directly challenge
Roe v. Wade, but opponents have vowed to
challenge the abortion ban on a federal level. Elizabeth Warren,
