Man survives plunge into Hawaii's Kilauea volcano

HAWAII — A 32-year-old soldier searching for a better view of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano survived a 70-foot plunge into the crater.
CBS News reports that according to parks spokesman Ben Hayes, Einstein climbed over the permanent metal railing at the Steaming Bluff overlook so he could peer into the crater.
The problem is—he just went into the crater after the ground collapsed beneath him while he was on a 300-foot cliff.
A Darwin Award was in his grasp until a pesky ledge around 70 feet below him stopped his rendezvous with some lava.
According to CBS News, luckily, another person saw the man fall around 6:30 p.m. and called emergency services.
Rescuers from the park and county were able to rappel down to the ledge and get the soldier onto a stretcher and get him out.
He was then airlifted to the Hilo Medical Center, where he currently remains in stable condition.
There's a railing for a reason folks.
