Former President Pratibha Patil has defended sharp criticism against her on pardoning the death penalty of 4 rape convicts during her tenure. Patil clarified that it was MHA that advised her to pardon the death penalty of the 4 rape convicts. This clarification comes after a furore that when she was President, commuted the death sentences of seven rapist-murderers to life imprisonment following the mercy petitions filed by them. Patil says all their mercy petitions were accepted on the recommendation of the Ministry of Home Affairs, then headed by P. Chidambaram.
