In an IPL-style auction, the first ever hockey league has become the most lucrative tournament. Five franchise owners opened their purse strings at the auction. Indian captain Sardar Singh was the most sought after player and went to the Delhi Wave-riders for a whopping 42.5 lakh rupees. The biggest surprise of the day was drag-flicker V R Raghunath's winning bid of 41.4 lakh rupees, by the Sahara UP Warriors, way up from his base price of 7.6 lakh rupees. Dutch stalwart Ten De Nooijer became the league's most expensive player, taking home 47.61 lakh rupees. The inaugural HIL will take place from the 16th of January to February 10 next year. Never before has such money being offered in this sport for a mere four-week stint.
