Congress has openly ruled out Manmohan Singh as Presidential nominee. Congress also rejected the names of Abdul Kalam and Somnath Chatterjee as Presidential nominees. In a joint press conference, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh on Wednesday named Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as one of their choices for the post of President, a move that apparently left the ruling Congress party running the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) II egg-faced.
