Mitt Romney's presidential hopes are hanging by a thread tonight as he trails in key swing states or has lost others he had been confident of winning to Barack Obama. The Republican candidate is behind in Ohio and also must-win Florida while President Barack Obama has won Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. With 42 per cent of the vote counted in Ohio, Romney was five points behind Obama. In Florida, Obama was ahead by just 19,543 votes with well over seven million and 84 per cent counted but Democratic areas still to complete their returns. While a repeat of the 2000 Florida recount fiasco is possible, the result there could be academic if Obama does win Ohio, which decided the 2004 election for President George W. Bush.
