West Bengal: ‎13 babies die in Malda in 48 hours - NewsX

Shocking news has come from Malda district of West Bengal. 13 infants have reportedly died at the District hospital in the last 48 hours. Most of them were newborns, and the deaths have been attributed to extreme low birth weight and malnutrition. This district hospital was upgraded to the status of a medical college hospital earlier this year. Doctors reportedly say, the infrastructure however was not upgraded.
There were reportedly only 60 beds in the pediatric ward of the hospital and sometimes two or three babies are kept on a single bed as the hospital gets very crowded. Even in the previous instances when the death toll of babies climbed suddenly, the doctors have been defended by state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In January this year, when 15 babies died within 48 hours, Mamata had hung the blame on her pet peg the Left govt that ruled the state before hers. The Trinamool chief says all this is because of poor infrastructure of Government hospital left by previous Left-ruled govt that governed for 34 years since 1977 never put proper attention on medical infrastructure of state.
