Today News: India's Food Bill Debate Derailed, Again
  • 5 years ago
India News: The Indian government's hopes of pushing an ambitious food security law through Parliament were snuffed out for the second day by protests from opposition parties calling for the resignation of Law Minister Ashwani Kumar.

The food security law, if passed, would put in place a program that aims to guarantee cheap food grains to about 70% of the Indian population, or roughly 900 million people. The bill, championed by Congress party President Sonia Gandhi, is expected to be the main campaigning plank of the ruling Congress party-led coalition for the general election, which must take place by next May.
