Two Koreas to preserve one of 11 border guard posts, selected for removal, for historical value
  • 5 years ago
The two Koreas are removing 11 guard posts each within their side of the DMZ,... but have agreed to preserve one GP each,... for symbolic value.
According to Seoul's defense ministry, the two sides shared an understanding that some guard posts need to be retained,.. thus they each chose one considered to bear the most historical significance.
Firearms and troops will be withdrawn from the guard post,... but the facility itself will be preserved for peaceful purposes.
The border guard post that South Korea has decided to retain is located close to the East Sea,.. and it was the very first such structure built in 1953.
During last month's general-level military talks,... Seoul and Pyeongyang agreed to remove the eleven GPs in the DMZ by the end of this month.
