Is Fake Fur Really Better if It's Made of Plastic? Faux fur is
all the rage
right now. Luxury fashion brands, such as Burberry, have vowed to stop using animal fur in their designs. Entire cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco have also moved toward banning the sale of fur. At first glance, it may appear that faux fur is more ethical and sustainable than the real thing. But faux fur is made from synthetic fibers like acrylic, modacrylic and polyester, all of which are
forms of plastic. Plastic is extremely harmful for wildlife and the environment. It takes hundreds of years to biodegrade. But real fur is also full of chemicals used to stop the decomposition process. Plastic has been found inside 60% of seabirds and 100% of sea turtle species, according to the Ocean Conservancy.
