Minister: Gov't serious about protecting Orang Asli rights

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waytha Moorthy said the government is taking the issues faced by the Orang Asli community in Gua Musang seriously.

Waytha said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has expressed concern over the matter, however land related matters are under the purview of the Kelantan state government.

He added that the federal government is currently studying the legal hurdles to address the issue.

The Temiar community had set up a blockade against a durian plantation company in defence of their native customary land rights, which the Kelantan government has refused to recognise.

Earlier this week, enforcement officers, including the police, oversaw the removal of the blockade which a durian company claimed was obstructing access to its plantation.
