Weather authorities warned of torrential rains, flash floods and landslides as Hurricane Lane moved closer to Hawaii.

This video, shared to Facebook by Jaykob Cheney, shows Wailuku River in Hilo overflowing with floodwaters on August 23.

Hurricane Lane, forecast to make landfall in the state, lashed the Big Island with nearly 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. Locals prepared for the hit by stocking up on supplies and filling up sandbags.

Shelters were opened up on Big Island and in Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

The hurricane was downgraded to a Category 3 storm later in the day.
