On June 25, a group of people organizing under the hashtag #OccupyICEPDX outside the headquarters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Portland, Oregon, were given a notice from the Department of Homeland Security to leave or face arrest.The gathering began as a demonstration and graduated to a round-the-clock protest on June 17 against the Trump administration’s treatment of illegal immigrant families. In a statement on June 21, ICE said operations would be suspended at the premises until safety concerns had been addressed.Early on June 25, a team of law enforcement officers was able to enter the premises when protesters were sleeping outside.Later in the day, officers from the Department of Homeland Security handed out fliers stating the occupation was “unlawful under federal law,” and that those who continued would risk “arrest and prosecution.”Video posted on Twitter by the activist group shows the officers handing out the fliers.The demonstrators said their occupation would end after four demands were met: that the ICE facility be closed and removed from Portland; that children separated from their families be reunited with them; that the US cease incarcerating immigrants; and that ICE be abolished.
