North Korea readies return of U.S. soldiers' remains as summit pledges begin to be carried out

북미정상회담 합의 첫 이행, 미군 유해 곧 송환 - 김현욱 박사 대담

To discuss the latest developments with North Korea, we have with us Professor Kim Hyun-wook, from the Korea National Diplomatic Academy. It's good to have you with us again, Professor.

My pleasure.

1 - It looks like the repatriation of the remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean War will take place this week. Can you briefly explain to our viewers the history behind the returning of the remains of the U.S. soldiers and how significant a step this is for North Korea-U.S. relations right now?

2 - The return of the remains is one of the key pledges made by North Korea and the U.S. at the June 12th summit in Singapore. South Korea and the U.S. have been taking their own steps to improve relations by suspending military drills for the time being. What do you make of this like-for-like (or tit-for-tat) way of working with North Korea? Do you think it will lead towards a positive result?

3 - North Korean state media outlets are saying that if the U.S. takes more confidence-building measures then Pyongyang will respond in kind. What kinds of things do you think North Korea wants to see, and what kind of measures will North Korea take in response? (...)

4 - It's been almost two weeks since the North Korea-U.S. summit, and relations between the two still seem quite good. But we are yet to see any follow-up talks. We had expected them to happen last week, because it was suggested by the White House, but there is still no word on them. Why do you think that is?
