Protesters Picket Against New ICE Building in Houston

People gathered on Thursday, June 21, to protest a new potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement child detention center in Houston, Texas.A warehouse was leased by Southwest Key Programs, a contractor already running a confinement facility in South Texas, to hold undocumented children in Houston, according to news reports.The protesting took place outside of the proposed child detention facility in downtown Houston. Another demonstration was scheduled to take place Friday, June 22, according to local news outlets.Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner told local news channels that he didn’t want the city “to participate in a policy that I think is morally bankrupt.”Trump signed an executive order on June 20 to end the policy of separating children from parents attempting to cross the US-Mexico border illegally. Parents awaiting prosecution for immigration violations will now be held with their children in federal custody.
