Debris from the 83 containers that fell from a Taiwanese ship off the coast of Port Stephens, New South Wales, on May 31 washed up a beach on the other side of the Salamander Bay.Conservation group Econetwork Port Stephens’ Nigel Dique and other volunteers had been helping in cleanup efforts in the aftermath of the spill. He told Storyful he found foam and packing materials along the Wanda Beach.“This kind of pollution… when it breaks up can be deadly for fish, turtles and seabirds that mistake it for food,” Dique said.SBS reported the debris could continue to pollute the area for several months.
