Spanish police have arrested Rosario Porto Ortego on suspicion of murdering her adopted daughter, according to a report by El Pais.

The 12-year-old Chinese born girl, Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto, was found dead by a young couple at 1:30 am Sunday in woodlands on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, five kilometers away from Porto's country house.

The divorced parents reported their daughter missing just hours before the girl's body was discovered. Police detained lawyer Porto, 44, and her former husband, journalist Alfonso Basterra Camporro, 49.

The murder is believed to have taken place on Saturday night, around the time when witnesses saw Porto leaving her home in A Póboa, Montouto. Police investigations determined that the girl died from asphyxiation and was given drugs before being tied up.

Small crowds of onlookers gathered, as the two parents were escorted in handcuffs from Porto's apartment in downtown Santiago de Compostela ahead of a search by police. Porto was taken into custody on Tuesday based on inconsistencies in her confession.

Authorities believe that the considerable inheritance could explain the motive for the young girl's murder.
