Supreme Court rejects Karnataka's plea to adjourn hearing in Cauvery water case
  • 6 years ago
The Supreme Court isn’t staying the Cauvery water sharing case after the Karnataka government requested it be adjourned until July because of an ‘absence of government’ in the state. The Karnataka government also said that it would like to file its objections on the Centre’s draft scheme on distributing the waters of the Cauvery river. Meanwhile, the Kerala government also objected to the Centre’s draft scheme, saying that they get 4% of the water, while expected to shell out 15% of the cost towards the board. It said that the control of dams and reservoirs should lie with states as opposed to the Cauvery Management Board. Its objections were also rejected by the court. The top court asked the Centre to file a modified scheme by 17th May. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have fought over the river for more than a century now. On February 16, the Supreme Court reduced the quantity of water Karnataka was asked to supply to Tamil Nadu by 14.75 tmc (thousand million cubic litres).
