Sewol-ho ferry disaster memorial services held nationwide today
  • 6 years ago
Various memorial events were held across the country over the weekend to mark the fourth anniversary of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster,... and more ceremonies are expected to take place today.
We have our Park Hee-jun on the line for us.
Hee-jun, what kind of events can we expect throughout the day?

Mark.
In the wake of the Sewol-ho ferry disaster,... the government designated April 16th as National Safety Day to reflect upon the importance of public safety.
A government-led event is already taking place since 11 AM at the central government complex in Seoul.
Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon is heading the event,... and he will propose roadmaps and policies that ensure a safer Korea.
Around 400 people, including government officials and regular citizens, are at the event.

And the government will also hold a special memorial service for the victims today?

That's right.
The government will hold a special ceremony at the official government memorial alter at the Hwarang Amusement Park in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do Province-- home to Danwon High School, which lost a great number of students and teachers in the disaster.
It's the first time the government is sponsoring a memorial ceremony for the Sewol-ho ferry accident.
And that will be one of the main events commemorating the fourth anniversary of the disaster today.
The event begins in a few hours at 3PM.
Around 5-thousand people, including Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon , various government officials, families of the victims, and ordinary citizens,... are expected to attend the ceremony to pay tribute to the 261 students and teachers of Danwon High School who lost their lives four years ago.
I'll be at the site for live updates in our later newscasts.

Meanwhile, another special memorial service for the other 11 victims,... will be held at the same time, in the western port city of Incheon.
Sponsored by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety,... around 300 people will be attending the service.
It's the first such service for those 11 victims,... and more ceremonies of its kind will be held across the country today. Mark.
