Do you struggle with your balance? Are you at risk of falling and injuring yourself, possibly fracturing something? Listen in for a simple exercise to help improve your balance safely. This will help improve your performance and lessen chance of injury in life or sport.

Hi this is Dana Ranahan from Body Works Sports Physiotherapy in North Vancouver and today I’m here to talk about balance. A lot of times as we get older, our balance gets less and we’re more prone to falls or breaking things. Plus if we’re athletic or into sports, balance is really important to enable you to perform better and not get injured. So one test we can look at is, standing on one leg and trying to see, if I face towards you, trying to see can I maintain my balance. Well sometimes if there is pain or problem, one leg balance is too much for people. So we do work on one leg balance but another thing you can try is what we call tandem stance balance. Where we’re going to have one foot in front of the other like this, and sometimes I get people to use a mirror to help. So you can look at yourself in the mirror, one foot in front of the other, trying to keep feet even between the two, and can I maintain my alignment at all and as I’m there, if I maintain my alignment, I close my eyes and see what happens to my balance and often people then start to sway more. Then I would switch feet, so put one foot in front of the other and then switch the opposite. So try this only as long as you’re not going to fall and hurt yourself and closing your eyes and seeing how your balance is. So tandem stance balance and usually hold it for 30 seconds or something like that if you can and do your best. Improving your balance will improve your performance.
