Supporters of Brazilian ex-President Luis “Lula” da Silva tried to stop him from surrendering himself to police on April 7, after appeals to suspend his arrest failed. This video shows Lula being carried by a crowd that chant “En sou Lula,” or “I am Lula,” outside the Metal Workers Union in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo. After passing through the crowd, da Silva entered a police vehicle in a convoy of cars, Reuters reported. The former country leader said he would surrender despite being innocent of charges related to his recipient of an apartment as a bribe. A number of politicians, including former President Dilma Rousseff, faced similar charges under an investigation dubbed Operation Car Wash.Lula’s comeback bid in October’s presidential elections might be squashed by his conviction.
