Cost of preparing ancestral table for Lunar New Year far cheaper at traditional markets

Let's start with the New Year holiday.
As is the tradition on Lunar New Year, Korean families gather to honor their ancestors by preparing an 'ancestral rites table'.
This year the cost of the ingredients were shown to be almost half the price in traditional markets compared to large department stores.
Due to the anti-graft act, more gift sets in department stores are within the 50 to 100 U.S. dollar range.
Lee Jeong-yeon has the details.
Around this time of year, Koreans are busy with the annual tradition... of preparing the ancestral rites table, or charyesang . It is a ceremony that honors the memory of the family's ancestors on major holidays such as Korean Thanksgiving, or Chuseok , and the Lunar New Year, or Seollal . The ancestral table consists of a variety of dishes ranging from dried fish to fruit.
This year the average cost of buying all the ingredients for the ancestral table is around 186 U.S. dollars if bought at a traditional market, but around 363 dollars at a department store. That's a difference of about 177 dollars.
The cost of ingredients from traditional markets rose by around 0-point-7 percent on-year, but the cost of buying them from large department stores rose by around 6 percent.
In department stores, most gift sets this year are designed to fit within the 50 to 100 thousand won bracket.
This is due to the anti-graft act that caps prices at 50 thousand won,
or 46 U.S. dollars for gifts, and 100 thousand won, or 92 dollars, for agricultural products,... according to the law's most recent revision. Three of the largest supermarket chains in Korea have increased their number of agricultural gift sets in the 50 to 100 thousand won bracket by 20-percent compared to last year.
Not all families seem to be carrying out this tradition this year however,... as a recent survey shows a downward trend in the number of households preparing charyesang. 6 in 10 households will be preparing it this year, which is a 70 percent drop compared to 2014.
