Top diplomats of China and Japan agree to improve relations, cooperate on North Korea

After years of frosty ties,... China and Japan are trying to make amends.
Beijing's top diplomat says China recognizes Japan has made efforts to turn over a new leaf... and his country will do the same.
The two sides also agreed to push for a three-way summit with South Korea as the simmering tension with North Korea persists.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono sat down with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Sunday to talk North Korea and their bilateral relations.
China and Japan have a long history of sparring over a series of territorial and historical disputes,... but have recently been pushing to improve their ties.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed in November during a summit in Vietnam to attempt a "fresh start."
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi acknowledged the Japanese government's strong willingness to improve bilateral ties, saying friendly relations would be in the interests of both countries.
"At present, Sino-Japanese relations are at a crucial stage. There is positive progress, but many disturbances and obstacles remain. China -Japan ties always sail against the current, either foreign ahead or drifting backwards. We attach importance to positive statements and remarks recently made by the Japanese side regarding relations with China..."
Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono said China and Japan both have a "major responsibility in safeguarding the stability and prosperity of Asia and the world at large" as the world's second and third largest economies.
He emphasized the need to ramp up pressure on North Korea over its nuclear development and the two diplomats confirmed their will to fully implement existing UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea.
"I believe it's important not only to discuss issues related to the two countries, but for Japan and China to stand side by side to deal with global issues. In particular, the North Korea issues is now an urgent issue for the whole of international society. I hope to deepen bilateral coordination on such issues also, and make efforts towards the resolution of such issues."
China and Japan also agreed to push for a trilateral summit with South Korea as soon as possible, and to foster the proper environment for three-way talks.
