The name of the band suggests a cross between Brazilian pitanga berry (Surinam cherry) and mulberry as a subtle metaphor to their mix of influences – even though their Brazilian accent was intended to be the most important flavor in their recipe from the very get-go.
‘Pontes para Si’ not only does the group carry on with their Brazilian popular music essence – Ângelo Ursini, Daniel Altman, Diego Casas, Flora Poppovic, and Ga Setúbal now point at different directions by experimenting with styles ranging from traditional jazz and waltz to typically Brazilian xote, baião, samba, gafieira, funk, and maracatu.
The songs’ arrangements teem with textures, musicianship, and wholeness, benefiting from the participation of contemporary guests like Lulinha Alencar (accordion), Fi Maróstica (bass) and Douglas Alonso (percussion). Other luxury guests include Mônica Salmaso – who takes ‘Ceará’ to an even-higher level in a lovely duet with Flora Poppovic – and Teco Cardoso (woodwind section).
The concept of this second album expands the collective verve of the five members with Swami Jr. that preserve the group’s tone and explore new possibilities. As multi-instrumentalists, the musicians take turns singing and playing all sorts of instruments, which enriches their sonic landscapes throughout the record. All lyrics were penned by Diego Casas while Ga Setúbal, Daniel Altman and Angelo Ursini wrote and arranged most of the music.
Pitanga em Pé de Amora celebrated the release of their self-titled debut album in 2011.
