40th edition - N°22 - 2004: Chagin versus De Rooy - Dakar 2018

In 2004, the Kamaz trucks found the winning formula. They exerted their dominance led by their team leader known as “The Tsar”, who had collected three titles so far in his illustrious career. But Dakar truckers are not the sort to give up without a fight, especially when you’re talking about Gerard De Rooy. The son of the 1987 category winner, Jan De Rooy, was in his second Dakar as a driver and intended to give Vladimir Chagin all he could handle… but he only finished 3rd in 2004. While in 2011 the Tatarstan driver would go on to set the truck record at 7 wins ahead of Karel Loprais, De Rooy’s perseverance eventually paid off. The Dutchman took his first win in 2012 then did it again in 2016.
