A military vehicle blocked Samora Machel Avenue in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, on November 15 as the Zimbabwean military took control of state media channels and set up checkpoints in the city, according to reports. Residents appeared unfazed. In a nation-wide announcement made via the country’s national broadcaster, Zimbabe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), Zimbabwe’s military implied it had President Robert Mugabe in custody but denied it had seized power or was attempting a “coup,” arguing it was instead “targeting criminals around him.”The announcement came after tanks were spotted driving toward Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, on November 14. Local news outlet Khuluma Afrika reported that President Mugabe’s house and the offices of ZBC had been sealed off by military personnel that same day to increase security.
