Protesters took to the streets of Harare, Zimbabwe, on August 1 after ZANU-PF were declared winners of this year’s election.Local military dispersed crowds, with reports of shots being fired, as anti-ZANU-PF protesters expressed their discontent at the party’s election win.These videos captured by eyewitness Masiyiwa Lewis Nyambabvu show protesters gathering in Harare. One clip shows riot police waiting in a nearby van. In another clip, Nyambabvu can be heard accusing the police of using tear gas, although this cannot be seen in the footage. “They are tear gassing us now; water cannons on the ready,” he says. “This is getting crazy now. But the people are determined.”Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi told media that the army had been deployed to "ensure that law and order is maintained … [and] that peace and security prevails, The Zimbabwe Mail reported. According to reports from Sky News, at least one civilian was shot dead and army helicopters were also spotted in the skies.ZANU-PF won two-thirds of the seats in parliament, beating rival party MDC Alliance, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation tweeted, and early results indicated ZANU-PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa was in the lead to win the presidential election.On July 31, Zimbabwe took to the polls for the first time since the 2017 removal of Robert Mugabe, also of the ZANU-PF party.
