Chance the Rapper gave a speech to Chicago City Council on Wednesday, November 8, to encourage them to spend $10 million on city schools instead of on the purchase of land for a new police training academy.In footage showing the speech, Chance, real name Chancelor Bennett, said he was there “for the city of Chicago,” and spoke about how simple things like libraries in schools could make a difference. “We should understand that financially this proposal doesn’t make sense,” he said of the planned police academy. “We don’t have $95 million.”Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan for the new facility has been budgeted at $95 million.Despite Chance’s speech, the council voted 48-1 to use the $10 million for land for the proposed academy.
