Catalonians danced and cheered in the street in Barcelona, Spain, on October 27, after the Catalan Parliament announced a majority vote in favor of declaring independence from Spain.European Parliament President Antonio Tajani stated that the Catalan Parliament’s declaration vote is a “breach of the rule of law, violates the Spanish constitution and the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia,” saying also that “no one in the European Union will recognise this declaration.”The Spanish Senate voted on Friday to invoke Article 155 of the constitution, which allows the Spanish government to “adopt the necessary means” to force an “autonomous community” to comply. Later in the day, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that he dissolved the Catalan Parliament and that elections would be held in Catalonia on December 21.
