Catalan Parliament Members Sing Anthem After Vote to Declare Independence From Spain

Members of the Catalan Parliament applauded and sang Catalonia’s anthem on October 27 after voting in favor of declaring independence from SpainEuropean Parliament President Antonio Tajani stated that the Catalan Parliament’s declaration vote was a “breach of the rule of law,” and that it “violates the Spanish constitution and the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia.” He said “no one in the European Union will recognise this declaration.”The Spanish senate voted on Friday to invoke Article 155 of the constitution, which allows the Spanish government to “adopt the necessary means” to force an “autonomous community” to comply. Later in the day, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that he dissolved the Catalan Parliament and that elections would be held in Catalonia on December 21.
