Hurricane Maria damage in pictures: Dominica WRECKED by Category 5 storm
HURRICANE Maria devastated Dominica and tore the roofs off homes when it made landfall as a category 5 hurricane last night. Here are the most shocking pictures from Dominica. “My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains.” Photographs of the devastation have not yet emerged, but images of the chaos are expected to start pouring in later today as the relief effort gets under wayMaria was the worst hurricane to strike the island since David in 1979 and there are fears that it will have caused similar levels of destruction. The photo below shows the horrendous damage sustained when category 5 David swept over Dominica 38 years ago.
Blurry cameraphone images taken on Dominica show strong winds battering trees and a number of fragile-looking houses.Harrowing photos taken on nearby Guadeloupe overnight showed torrential rain and powerful winds lashing a deserted car park, offering some insight as to what Dominica might have experienced.Uprooted and snapped trees littered roads in Guadeloupe and the street of Pointe-a-Pitre was completely flooded.Meanwhile residents in Puerto Rico have started boarding up windows and doors ahead of Maria’s expected arrival on Wednesday. Emergency services are now frantically working to prepare the Virgin Islands for Maria’s imminent arrival.Both the British and US Virgin Islands are forecast to receive as much as 20 inches of rainfall as Maria continues trace the path of Hurricane Irma.The latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory said: "Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides from heavy rainfall are expected across the Leeward Islands, including Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands.". 00FastNews.
