Hurricane Maria damage in pictures: Hurricane Maria WRECKS Puerto Rico
HURRICANE Maria is ravaging Puerto Rico as it continues its destructive path across the Caribbean. Here are the most shocking pictures of the damage. Photographs of the devastation on Puerto Rico are few and far between, but images of the chaos are expected to start pouring in later today once the eye of the hurricane has passed. A blurry photo taken from inside Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan shows trees being slammed by the relentless gales with branches littering the ground nearby. Images coming out of the island overnight show people frantically preparing for Maria’s arrival. One captures a man in San Juan being battered by torrential rain and strong winds as he carries a young girl in his arms. Another, taken at a refuge in the Puerto Rican capital, shows rows of people sheltering from the storm on camp beds.
Meanwhile, a photo of windswept palm trees in the city of Fajardo yesterday shows extreme gusts starting to hammer the Puerto Rican coast. NBC and MSNBC meteorologist Bill Karins has reported that homes have already been destroyed in the city.He tweeted: “Reports of historic wood homes destroyed in Fajardo, even blown away.”Residents on the island have been warned that they are at serious risk of death if they do not evacuate their homes. Hector Pesquera, Puerto Rico's public safety commissioner, said: "You have to evacuate. Otherwise, you're going to die. I don't know how to make this any clearer."Hurricane Maria made its first landfall on Dominica on Monday, but contact with the island has been blighted by the extent of the destruction. The latest NHC advisory said “extremely dangerous” Maria is likely to drench Puerto Rico with up to 25 inches of rainfall and the island could be hit by tornadoes throughout the day.
