Ok, it’s official. No, like, Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise in “It” is officially the biggest horror movie opening of all time, pulling in $117.2 million dollars in the first weekend.
According to CNBC, the big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s novel destroyed records and apparently is the largest opening of any movie in September, scaring crowds in 4,103 locations across the United States.
Even more impressively, Skarsgard’s new film only cost $35 million dollars to produce, which makes it a huge hit for the Warner Bros studio.
There were a lot of factors against the movie’s success… It has a hard R rating, and premiered during the opening of the National Football League’s season as well as Hurricane Irma’s devastation. Despite this, it earned an 86 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes due to the fact that it’s such an enjoyable film.
The movie also surprised fans by being labeled, “Chapter 1,” with a second installment slated to premiere in 2019… Now that it’s earned over 100 million dollars over the first weekend, it’s safe to say an “It” sequel will be floating back to theaters in a big way.
