President Trump is said to have called the House-passed GOP bill aimed at overhauling Obamacare “mean.”
Multiple news outlets issued similar reports about the president’s comments based on inside sources who were privy to the contents of his conversation on Tuesday with a group of Republican senators.
According to the Associated Press, “One source said Trump called the House bill ‘mean, mean, mean' and said, ‘We need to be more generous, more kind.’ The other source said Trump used a vulgarity to describe the House bill and told the senators, ‘We need to be more generous.’”
Meanwhile, a CNN report states that “Trump made clear multiple times that he was pleased that the Senate negotiations appeared to be moving away from where the House version of the repeal and replace effort ended up, according to three sources familiar with the meeting.”
While it was reportedly unclear which specific elements of the House bill he was referring to, insiders told CNN that Trump seemed to be particularly supportive of adding more funding to the bill in order to better protect enrollees.
These comments represent a departure from a speech he gave on May 4 after the bill passed in the House.
At the time, Trump remarked, "...premiums will be coming down. Yes, deductibles will be coming down. But very importantly, it’s a great plan."
He also said, "This has really brought the Republican Party together, as much as we’ve come up with a really incredible healthcare plan."
