Turkish President Erdogan Resumes Position as AKP Leader

Following a referendum in April that amended Turkey’s constitution to grant greater power to the presidential office, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan resumed his role as leader of the ruling AK Party (AKP) on May 21.Prior to the referendum, the Turkish constitution required the president to give up political party membership. However, the outcome of the vote has meant that Erdogan now has the presidency, while also being able to control the parliament as leader of the ruling party.During a speech marking his return to the party, Erdogan took an aggressive tone, saying Turkey wanted “to stand tall today against the scum at home and abroad,” Reuters reported.This video shows Erdogan speaking on stage during the party congress on May 21.
