SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA — Two adults and an 8-year-old student are now deceased as a result of a firearms discharge that took place at a California elementary school on April 10.

At 10:25 a.m., Cedric Anderson, 53, entered North Park Elementary School carrying a concealed weapon. He reportedly signed in at the front desk to visit his wife, Karen Elaine Smith.

Smith, 53, was teaching a special needs class of mixed-grade students believed to be between the ages of 8 and 10, when Anderson walked into her classroom and opened fire. Police believe he fired a fatal shot at Smith, while also injuring two students standing near her at the time. Jonathan Martinez, 8, later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities suspect Anderson turned the weapon on himself, and expired as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two children injured in the incident were flown by helicopter to local area hospitals, where the one who survived remains in stable condition.

The school’s other 520 children were evacuated and taken to a nearby high school where they could be reunited with their parents.
